Meet the Team
Paula Thomas BA (Hons) FCA DcHA
I joined Walker Moyle in 1996 as a Chartered Accountant manager. I became a partner in 2003 and latterly became a director following a management buyout and restructuring of the business in 2014.
My specialist area is charities and not for profit organisations, but as a general practitioner I have the experience to help clients across all areas of audit, accounts and tax.
I try to find out what the client’s objectives are for their business and plan a way to help them achieve this. Running your own business brings with it lots of experience, which I’m always happy to share with other business owners.
Outside of work I like spending time with Flora, my yellow Labrador. I’m also car mad and a Lotus enthusiast, which is probably why I like the ‘Fast & Furious’ films!
I am a relatively new member of the team, joining Walker Moyle in September 2015 when I started studying towards the ICAEW CFAB qualification (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales - Certificate in Finance, Accounting & Business). The Certificate, which as of December 2016 I have passed, consists of the same six modules as the first level of ACA. I am now an ACA student and am looking to complete the Professional and Advanced Levels of the Chartered qualification in the coming years.
The majority of my work comprises of the preparation of accounts for a range of sole traders, partnerships and limited companies, across a varied range of industries, from small businesses to larger companies and partnerships with turnovers well in excess of £1million. In addition, I assist in the processing of payroll and preparation of VAT returns.
When I am not working or studying I like to play, and volunteer coach, badminton at my local club and at County level. I also like to spend quality time with my family and friends and go walking around the local coast and countryside – but only when the weather is right!
I’ve recently joined Walker Moyle as a trainee accountant, based at the Redruth office. My workload is interesting and varied and sees me working on various projects including the early stages of preparing accounts, processing payroll and helping to calculate tax returns.
My aim is to study for the Institute of Chartered Accountant’s in England and Wales’ Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business.
I work with a range of clients from farmers to restaurants and tourism related businesses and with sole traders to limited companies.
Outside of work I’m a musician, playing the flute and saxophone and I recently graduated with a degree in Music. I live on a beef farm and help with looking after the cattle whenever I can.
Briony Crookes BSc (Hons) ACA
I joined the team in 2013 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in December 2014. I also hold the audit qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales due to knowledge and experience I have in audit.
Based out of the Penzance office, I spend most of my time working on audits for companies, charities and not for profit organisations. I also work for various clients doing accounts preparation, management accounts, personal and company tax calculations.
In my spare time, I enjoy running and keeping fit - I recently completed the London Marathon for a local charity. I also enjoy baking and good food, which I love to share with my family and friends.
Eddie Curnow FFA/FIPA, FFTA
I joined the firm 38 years ago, in 1978, and I am based in the St Ives office. I am a fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants and also of the Federation of Tax Advisers.
My role covers a range of tasks including personal tax, corporation tax, VAT and the preparation of accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies with ranges of turnover from a few thousands to several millions.
Being located in St Ives, a predominately tourist-orientated town, where I was born and fortunate enough to live (the beaches and coastline are world famous), furnished holiday letting businesses form a significant part of my portfolio of clients. Rather than merely carry out functions for clients, each member of the staff here in the St Ives office actually meet all of the clients in our range of duties. I still act for a number of them so I must be doing something right!
In my spare time I am a keen follower of rugby union football, with a particular interest in the adventures of “Trelawny’s Army” and their legendary trips to Twickenham for the final of the County Championship competition.
Secretary and Payroll Clerk
I joined the firm in 2011 and since then I have been providing secretarial, admin and payroll support to the teams in St Ives, Redruth and Penzance offices. I believe that customer care is important and I always try to help our clients when they phone or call in.
When I’m not working I enjoy spending time on the beach with my hubby, family and friends or walking the cliff paths. We enjoy trying different places to eat, especially breakfast! We play golf locally and I am still searching for that elusive “hole in one”! I also like watching any films that Kevin Costner has starred in!
Sarah Haigh ACCA
I am based at Walker Moyle’s Redruth office, where I qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in August 2015 and am also a Xero Certified Advisor. I prepare and review accounts and tax returns for small to medium-sized enterprises, with my specialist areas being accountancy software and IT. HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) regime is due to be phased in from April 2018, so I have volunteered myself to be the Walker Moyle MTD Champion. If you have any queries regarding MTD please feel free to contact me.
In my spare time I like visiting family in Thailand, swimming and listening to live music. I also love walking my sensationally handsome Jack Russell, Winston!
I joined Walker Moyle in June 2014 and I provide typing and admin support to the accountancy staff and directors. I’m the receptionist at the Redruth office, so it may be me you speak to when you call in! I also help out with credit control for the firm. I pride myself on committing to the task in hand, making sure I give it 100% of my attention.
Outside of work I like walking, reading and eating out. I like a good ‘soppy’ film, so love Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, Ghost and so on.
Roxanne Polhill MAAT
I joined Walker Moyle in November 2016 having previously passed my Association of Accounting Technician exams. As an Accounts Technician based in the Redruth office I get involved in many different activities including: bookkeeping and preparing accounts, processing and submitting VAT returns and producing management accounts. I assist my colleagues with the compilation of personal tax returns and am looking forward to doing more tax related work in the future.
I’m a Xero Certified Advisor, which means I am fully trained and can provide training to our clients who are wanting to use the Xero online accounting software. With the introduction of HMRC’s ‘Making Tax Digital’, I expect to be very busy advising clients on how to use this software so they comply with these new changes!
I love getting to know my clients, building rapport with them and understanding their business needs so that as a firm we can advise them on the best approach to take.
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my partner and two children and socialising with friends.
Mollie Porter MAAT
I began working for the firm in August 2011 as an accounts trainee and started studying for the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification which I completed in 2014. I am currently studying to become a Chartered Certified Accountant, which I hope to complete in 2018.
I undertake a wide variety of duties in the Penzance office and at clients’ premises, including the preparation of accounts for sole traders, partnerships and companies. I am well versed in payroll matters, including auto-enrolment. In addition, I assist with audit work, attend to company secretarial matters and regularly prepare management accounts that are tailored to clients’ needs.
Outside of work I like to spend time with my friends and family, go to the beach, and keep fit and healthy.
Richard Smith Dip RSA. AAT, CIPP
I’m based at the firm’s Redruth office and am involved with the processing of all things payroll related for our clients. This includes sorting out weekly or monthly payrolls, advising and helping clients to set up their auto-enrolment facilities and helping construction clients process their CIS monthly returns. I make a point of sticking to deadlines to ensure the smooth running of the department and to keep clients and their employees happy.
When I’m not at work I like to play golf with my partner, Debbie, and I also play chess for Penzance and Cornwall. I have an eclectic taste in music ranging from Mike and the Mechanics if I’m relaxing at home, to dance clubmix when I’m driving.
Andrew Symons ACCA CTA ATT
I joined Walker Moyle in 2008 and qualified as an Accounting Technician in mid-2011, before qualifying as both a Chartered Certified Accountant and Taxation Technician in 2015. I then sat the Chartered Institute of Taxation’s (CIOT) ‘CTA’ exams and qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in January 2017.
The CTA qualification is the highest level tax qualification available in the UK and is nationally recognised as the ‘gold standard’ of UK taxation education.
While studying to become a Chartered Tax Adviser the CIOT awarded me the Ronald Ison Medal for achieving the highest mark in the ‘Taxation of Individuals’ Advisory paper in May 2016. I also sat the ‘Taxation of Owner Managed Businesses’ Advisory exam at the same time and was awarded the LexisNexis prize for having the highest total marks in two technical ‘advisory’ papers taken at the same sitting.
I was awarded the Ian Walker Medal by the CIOT for achieving the highest mark in the CTA Awareness paper in November 2016.
The Association of Taxation Technicians presented me with the Stary Medal and Ivison Medal for the highest mark of any candidate in their Corporate Taxation and Personal Taxation exam papers respectively in May 2015.
I guess you could say I like all things tax related!
In December 2014, I was the 'Global Prizewinner' in the ACCA exam paper, "Advanced Audit and Assurance", achieving the highest mark worldwide of 16,815 candidates.
I have a particular interest in all aspects of personal, business and corporate tax and undertake both tax compliance and technical advisory work. In addition, I prepare statutory and non-statutory accounts for sole traders, partnerships, LLPs and companies ranging in size from small owner-managed businesses to those turning over many millions of pounds.
Hayley Taylor FCCA
I have worked for Walker Moyle since 1999 and I am based in their Redruth office. I am a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and I’m responsible for preparing year end and management accounts, calculating and submitting corporation tax, VAT and individual self-assessment tax returns.
I like to help clients to improve their record keeping, which in turn helps them to reduce their costs. Whenever there are changes in tax rules and legislation, I always aim to inform my clients as soon as possible, so they can plan ahead.
When I’m not at work I like horse riding and belly boarding, and regularly compete in the World Belly Boarding championships (although as yet, I’m not a champion!). I love to travel and so far have visited Australia, Hong Kong, Tibet, Russia, Japan and the USA.
I joined the Walker Moyle team at the Penzance office in September 2015 as a Trainee Accountant. I’m currently studying for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales’ Certificate in Finance, Accounting & Business (ICAEW CFAB).
I work on a number of jobs for our clients who come from different sectors across Cornwall. I’m also gaining experience working with different trading structures such as sole traders, partnerships, joint lettings and small limited companies. I assist with many different services provided by Walker Moyle including accounts preparation, payroll and VAT returns.
When not at work or studying towards my qualifications, I enjoy traveling, good food and fishing for mackerel and bass off the cliffs at Penberth Cove.
